Precocious puberty is the appearance of breasts, pubic hair, or menstruation in girls before age 8, or pubic hair and testicular enlargement in boys before age 9. It causes premature bone closure — leading to short adult height — and significant psychological stress.
The most common type (Central Precocious Puberty) is caused by early brain activation of puberty. Rarer causes include brain tumors, adrenal tumors, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, and exogenous hormone exposure.
Dr. Manoj Choudhary evaluates children urgently with MRI brain, bone age, and hormonal tests. Monthly GnRH agonist injections safely suppress puberty and protect the child’s adult height when treatment is needed.
Common Causes
Idiopathic Central Precocious Puberty (girls)
Brain tumor or hamartoma
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)
Adrenal or gonadal tumor
McCune-Albright Syndrome
Severe untreated hypothyroidism
⚠️ When to Seek Help: If your child under 8 is developing breasts, pubic hair, or body odor — this needs immediate medical evaluation. Delaying treatment shortens adult height.
