Precocious puberty is the appearance of breasts, pubic hair, or menstruation in girls before age 8, or pubic hair and testicular enlargement in boys before age 9. It causes premature bone closure — leading to short adult height — and significant psychological stress.
The most common type (Central Precocious Puberty) is caused by early brain activation of puberty. Rarer causes include brain tumors, adrenal tumors, Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, and exogenous hormone exposure.
